Built on Hope, Rebuilt with Love: Gresham Subaru's Impact on 4D Recovery

4D Recovery is incredibly grateful for the continued generosity of Gresham Subaru through their annual Share the Love® Event. Since 2015, their support has been instrumental in helping us expand life-saving recovery services for youth and families across Oregon. Last year, their Share the Love contribution supported our Adolescent & Family Recovery Campus capital campaign—helping us reach the exciting milestone of preparing for our grand opening. Their investment brought us to the brink of launching a first-of-its-kind space dedicated to healing, connection, and family-centered recovery. Tragically, a fire this past weekend has shifted that timeline. While heartbreaking, it has also strengthened our resolve. This year, Gresham Subaru's gift will now help us restore and rebuild that same campus—ensuring that the vision we've worked so hard to bring to life will still serve the young people and families who need it most. We truly could not do this work without partners like Gresham Subaru. Their long-standing support continues to fuel not just our growth, but our ability to persevere. We are deeply grateful.

Gresham Subaru grants young girl's wish to go to the American Girl Doll Store in Chicago!

Gresham Subaru has been an outstanding partner of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Oregon since 2019 and this year, continued their support by helping grant Lucy's wish to go to the American Girl Doll Store in Chicago, Illinois. The 7-year old loves playing with dolls and while on a strict diet due to a gastrointestinal disorder, loves ice cream. Jake and the team at Gresham Subaru purchased a ton of flavors of ice cream to celebrate Lucy, who brought a bunch of her friends out to the party! It was a beautiful day that once again illustrated Gresham Subaru's commitment to their local community by supporting Lucy and her family, who live not too far away, as they go through immense hardship and Lucy manages her condition. Thank you to the entire team at Gresham Subaru, under the leadership of Jake Pratt, who always raises his hand to help when the opportunity to support a local child arises! Since 2019, Gresham Subaru has donated over $74,900 to help grant wishes for local children!

Warmth, Dignity, and Community at Birch

On January 16, 2026, Gresham Subaru partnered with Operation Warm through the Subaru Loves to Help initiative to provide 300 coats, shoes, and socks to families at Birch Community Services. For many families in our community, access to warm clothing removes an immediate barrier. Children can head to school feeling comfortable and confident, and parents experience the relief of knowing their kids are protected during the winter months. Throughout the event, we saw smiles, quiet moments of gratitude, and families leaving with more than just essentials. They left feeling seen and supported. At Birch, we believe dignity matters. This partnership reflected that belief in action. By working together, Gresham Subaru and Operation Warm helped create a moment of care that strengthened trust and stability for families taking important steps forward. We are deeply grateful to Gresham Subaru for investing in our community and helping ensure families have what they need to stay warm, safe, and steady this season.

Gresham Subaru Loves Pets!

On October 1st, Oregon Humane Society partnered with Gresham Subaru for our Annual Day of Giving event, which spread awareness, raised funds, and encouraged people to volunteer with Oregon Humane Society. During that event, we collected donations to stuff our OHS branded Subaru vehicle with much needed pet supplies. Later in the month, on October 23rd, OHS visited Gresham Subaru to host an adoption awareness event. During our visit, we brought a litter of puppies, who playfully interacted with Gresham Subaru staff and prospective car buyers at the dealership. Oregon Humane Society is grateful for the continued support of the amazing people at Gresham Subaru!

A Beacon of Hope: How Gresham Subaru Fuels Recovery

4D Recovery is humbled and grateful for the continued generosity of Gresham Subaru through their annual Share the Love® Event. Year after year, their support has helped us open new spaces where young people can find healing, hope, and connection. Their commitment doesn’t just impact our organization—it transforms the lives of families caught in addiction and creates brighter futures for Oregon’s teens. This year’s gift from Gresham Subaru went directly toward building our Adolescent & Family Recovery Campus—the first of its kind in Oregon. This campus will be a beacon of hope for countless young people and families, offering the comprehensive, compassionate care they need to recover and thrive together. We couldn’t do this work without partners like Gresham Subaru. Their generosity means the world to us, and even more to the youth and families who will walk through our doors in the years to come. We love Gresham Subaru and are SO GRATEFUL!

Gresham Subaru Delivers Hope

On June 20th, Gresham Subaru partnered with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and Randall’s Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel through the Subaru Loves to Care initiative. This partnership involved delivering blankets and messages of hope to cancer patients. This year, Gresham Subaru will also support the LLS Urgent Need Program, Pediatric, which will provide 5 pediatric blood cancer patient households with financial relief to help offset non-medical costs associated with treatment, such as transportation, food, housing, utilities, etc. It was an amazing delivery day filled with kindness and connection. Through Gresham Subaru’s participation in these programs, it shows they care. Gresham Subaru consistently shows up and shows up for their community, and that impact was felt on the delivery day. Randall’s Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel was a joy to work with, and we were so happy they were the recipients of Gresham Subaru’s donation this year. We are so grateful to work and live in a community that takes care of one another. Thank you, Gresham Subaru and thank you Randall’s Children’s Hospital for being firm in your mission to help others.

Gresham Subaru Supports Birch Community Services

Imagine going without a coat, shoes, or even socks. For millions of children and adults experiencing homelessness and other urgent need situations across the country, even here in Gresham, this is a harsh reality. Helping others strengthens communities, which is why Gresham Subaru is partnering with Operation Warm®, a national nonprofit focused on connecting children with the resources they need to thrive. Through this partnership and other Subaru Loves to Help® efforts, Subaru and retailers like Gresham Subaru have helped nearly 900,000 children and adults in urgent need. On 02/20/2025, Gresham Subaru donated 204 coats to Birch Community Services. These essential items not only help keep children protected, warm, and dry, it can have a significant impact on a child's mental and emotional well-being.

Cameron's Wish

When your child is diagnosed with cancer, your world narrows. Every plan, every dream—put on hold. For us, those days felt endless. But this year, something beautiful happened: our son Cameron got to celebrate not just his birthday, but his recovery. He beat cancer. And Subaru was there to make that moment unforgettable. We arrived at the dealership expecting a small gesture. What we got was a full birthday celebration—decorations, balloons, the works. They didn’t just acknowledge the fight Cameron had been through. They honored it. He got to eat cupcakes, eat his favorite food (noodles!). Open a surprise gift: brand-new luggage, perfect for his Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World. That bag meant more than any toy ever could—it meant he was moving forward. That he had adventures waiting. It’s not every day that a car dealership throws a birthday party for a kid who fought for his life. But Gresham Subaru did. And we will never forget it. —Cameron’s mom

Gresham Subaru Helped Us Distribute Hundreds of Jackets to Underprivileged Kids

At Birch Community Services, we work with families facing tough financial situations—many doing everything right but still falling behind. One of the most consistent needs we hear about in colder months is warm clothing for their children. This past winter, through Subaru’s larger commitment to supporting local communities, we received a generous supply of high-quality jackets for kids of all ages. It couldn’t have come at a better time. With help from the team at Gresham Subaru, who showed up in person to help unpack, sort, and distribute the jackets, we were able to get hundreds of warm coats directly into the hands of families who needed them most. For some kids, it was the first brand-new jacket they’d ever owned. These moments matter deeply to the families we serve, and to us as well. We’re incredibly grateful for partners like Subaru and Gresham Subaru, who remind us what it looks like when local businesses show up, pitch in, and make a real difference. — The Birch Community Services Team

Boxer Puppy Day at Gresham Subaru – Shanon P

Gresham Subaru welcomed a handful of our rescue boxer puppies into their showroom as part of the Subaru Loves Pets initiative. The staff went above and beyond—setting up a welcoming space, greeting every visitor with enthusiasm, and genuinely helping our pups shine. Events like this make all the difference for our dogs. All of the puppies got a lot of attention and practice interacting with strangers in a healthy environment. We’re so grateful to Gresham Subaru for their partnership and their heart for rescue work. It’s clear they don’t just talk about loving pets—they live it.

Helping Underdogs like Nonnie

Oregon Humane Society (OHS) would like to thank Gresham Subaru for their recent participation in Subaru Loves Pets month (October 2024). Throughout the month, the dealership solicited donations of pet food from their community through a “Stuff the Subaru” supply drive. The Subaru Loves Pets partnership also included a grant of $6,000, administered by the ASPCA, which went toward necessary treatments – spay/neuter, microchips, and vaccinations -- to help animals become ready for adoption. Thanks to Gresham Subaru’s support, 816 animals found homes during the month of October from our Portland campus, including dogs, cat, kittens, puppies, rabbits, and one guinea pig. Among the animals adopted was Nonnie, a 10-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who was born with a congenital leg defect that left him with a severely twisted back leg. Nonnie’s leg didn’t cause him any pain, but it was scary to look at, and it gave him a permanent limp since one of his back feet could not touch the ground. Additionally, Nonnie had allergic dermatitis that had gone untreated for so long that most of the fur had fallen off of his back, and his bare skin had become infected. Nonnie’s age, skin problems, and twisted leg made numerous families pass him by. Finally, the perfect adopters found him and knew that they had to add Nonnie to their family. Nonnie was adopted on October 12, 2024. Thanks to Gresham Subaru’s support, OHS was able to care for Nonnie while he awaited her new family, including providing medicated baths to help heal his infected skin. We are so grateful to Gresham Subaru for their support during Subaru Loves Pets month, and for being an advocate for little underdogs like Nonnie.

Overwhelming Help in a time of need

I had a really great year in 2021. I bought my first Subaru and I met my friends Frances (12) and her parents Zoe and John. It was mid-pandemic and we had all been in the house for way too long. It sounded like her Mom & Dad needed a bit of a break. Being a Marriage & Family Therapist, I was able to get vaccinated early and offered to hang out with Frances a couple of afternoons a week. I had just sent my kids off to college and I remembered how difficult being a mom could be when you don’t have family around. We became great friends over the past few years and I have come to care for Frances when her Mom & Dad go on Tour. They’re in a neat band that you may have heard of? Portugal. The man. Fast forward to this year when my sturdy and reliable Crosstrek flashed it’s “CHECK ENGINE” light at me. I was near Gresham Subaru, so I drove on in. They were so kind and professional - right away. It looked like I needed a few general maintenance things, probably some new tires and a really odd oil drip on to my catalytic converter. I had a price in mind as to what the costs might be. But when I got the full estimate I was shocked. It was close to $7,000. The shop explained why and it made sense, except for the cost. So I called Subaru of America as well as the Manager of Gresham Subaru and asked for help. I was thinking, a payment plan perhaps? In my communication, I explained that this Subaru actually helps me take a really important gal to school – 30 miles each way. My magical friend Frances is Autistic, but more than that, she has been diagnosed with a rare genetic disease called DHDDS that is degenerative and has no cure. It’s manifestation looks like a combination of Parkinsons and Dementia; and she is one of six known cases in the world. So making sure she is well cared for and in a safe car means everything. I also sent over a link to her charity: www.franceschangedmylife.com and explained that there is no treatment or cure which also means there is no insurance coverage for this. A friendship was made. Jake the manager set up a call with me the next morning. He explained that they would like to help take care of the car so I can help take care of Frances. I was blown away and a bit teary. These kind souls gave me a rental for the week and did all the work on my car, including new tires. I don’t know that they know how incredible of a gift that was. Beyond that, Jake mentioned that Subaru was going to find a way to also help Frances’ Charity through Subaru’s share the love event. More tears. After all of this, I wanted everyone to meet. So we all gathered at Gresham Subaru for a picture and so many thank yous. It turns out Jake and his team are big fans of Frances’ parents which was even more fun! I’ve heard how great Subaru was for years. This experience has me convinced that there isn’t another brand of car that would have cared this much. I am a lifelong convert! With the ultimate thanks from the bottom of my heart – you are a neat company and I am proud to know you! Kelley O’Gorman

Gresham Subaru Caring for the Community

on 03/08/2024 I visited bcelli's restaurant in Gresham. For a quiet solitary meal. As I drew near the end of my meal, from my seat inside the restaurant I could see outside an elderly lady with a walker and another older woman approaching the area in front of the restaurant from the side of the building which just happened to be a step up higher than the walkeway. She was having a struggle geting up the walkway just as she was about to give up it seemed, a young man, along with his companion exited the restaurant. He immediately left his companions side and walked over to the elderly woman and gently helped her up the step. My heart was instantly warmed by this all too rare scene of compassion. it was just about that time that I noticed he was wearing a work jacket and looked closer to see where it was that this upstanding young man worked. It was at Gresham Subaru. As a long time customer of Gresham Subaru, I just wanted to reach out and let you know about this wonderful display of care for the community that your employee demonstrated. I was already very pleased with my service at Gresham Subaru, but that selfless gesture went even further to solidify my confidence in the fact that hardworking, high quality people work at Gresham Subaru. If I knew his name I would gladly state it. But I dont know it. All I know is that he was fairly young man out on his personal time that day but did not hesitate to render assistance when needed, completely unaware that he was being observed with much admiration. It made my day and weekend and will probably always bring a warm feeling in my heart when I think of the incident. Sincerely, Sharon Keller

A Better Life for Butterball & Roly Poly

Oregon Humane Society was fortunate to partner with Gresham Subaru on the Subaru Loves Pets campaign, highlighting underdogs in need of special adopters. Our favorite adoption that took place during the campaign was not one dog but two: a bonded pair named Butterball and Roly Poly. Affectionately called "the meatballs" by shelter staff, these two pups arrived from a partner shelter in Southern Oregon in mid-October, and we assumed they'd only spend a night or two in the shelter before being scooped up by a lucky adopter. However, it soon became apparent that finding the right family would take some time. Being a bonded pair meant that the dogs had to go home together, and weighing in at a combined 150lbs , this was a deterrent for some adopters. Additionally, both dogs were overweight and had breathing problems due to their breed, and both were diagnosed with ear infections and allergic dermatitis: two conditions that require continual medication and care. Fortunately, on October 30, their perfect match showed up! A young adopter named Miranda noticed the pair of pups on the OHS website and decided to submit an application. Undaunted by the dogs' medical needs, Miranda was eager to meet "the meatballs" and see if they were the right fit. As soon as everyone was in the adoption room together, Butterball walked over and plopped himself in Miranda's lap. It was a done deal! The adoption was finalized with the gift of a New Pet Parent kit, donated by Subaru. Special adoptions like Butterball and Roly Poly's cannot happen without the support and advocacy of our community partners, and having Gresham Subaru's support through the Subaru Loves Pets campaign made a huge difference for these two underdogs.

Gresham Subaru's Support Backs the Opening of a New Youth Recovery Center!

Here in Oregon, our teens are experiencing trouble with addiction and accidental overdose at a quicker growing rate than anywhere else in the entire country. We also have very few places for teens and their families to go for support. With the support of Gresham Subaru, 4D Recovery will open a Youth Recovery Center providing free and zero barrier services to teens and families in our local community. This new center located in SE Portland is projected to help hundreds of teens and their families! This space will be a safe, sober, and supportive space where teens and their families can find healing and support. Thank you for making this possible Gresham Subaru!

great customer service!

I wanted to take a few minutes of your time to share with you my experience with Gresham Subaru and "big" Subaru. I could not be happier with all your teams, from service to sales. My fist Subaru was in the shop a number of times. Every time it came in I knew that the team was doing everything they could to fix my car. They kept me well informed, treated me like a smart human (while not using over complicated tech terms) and used compassion in every interaction. They ensured I had a ride or rental car. They took my concerns serious and gave me ideas to help with diagnosis such as videoing the issues while they happened. After two years I decided to look for a new vehicle that would be more reliable. Matt and Crystal were beyond great. They explored options with me around how I use my car and what I wanted and did not want in a new car. Once we figured it out they worked with me locate the car and kept me up to date on when the car would arrive. By the time I came in to pick up the car the paperwork was ready and all we had to do was sign with Kanoe, who again made the process easy and clear. I had no concerns about buying another Subaru mainly due to how I was treated! Thank you for being a company that still cares about people not just numbers. I am a graphic facilitator and here is a little graphic thank you. Take care Megan. 503-860-6509

Gresham Subaru grants Peter's wish to go to Hawaii!

Gresham Subaru has been a longtime supporter of Make-A-Wish Oregon and this year, went all out to make Peter's wish special! As a part of the Wish Upon A Car Raffle that Gresham Subaru is the presenting sponsor for, they grant the wish of a local child and throw them a special party at their location to celebrate the exciting news! Wish kid Peter was referred as a teenager, after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. Due to the pandemic, he had to wait over three years for his wish to be granted. During that time, he had something to look forward to, helping him manage and fight through his treatments and hospital visits. When Gresham Subaru heard about Peter's wish, they jumped at the opportunity to help make it come true. They threw a wonderful party for Peter, his family and friends complete with a Hawaiian flavor with food and more! Shortly thereafter, Peter traveled to Oahu, swam with dolphins,, and enjoyed a relaxing time away with his family. He also used his incredible artistic skills to draw and photograph the tropical island. Gresham Subaru is an amazing community partner that continues to put those less fortunate ahead of themselves by supporting local wish kids as well as many other wonderful organizations. I want to personally thank their General Manager Jake and the entire team for their amazing work to make Peter's wish come true!

A Life Full of Adventure

Gresham Subaru empowers young people through their generosity, support, and outstanding commitment to excellence. 4D Recovery and Gresham Subaru are longtime community partners and together have helped countless young adults to make one of the biggest purchases of their lives.Together they have helped change the lives of so many. Together, they have given those who have experienced very difficult life circumstances something to smile about and something to make the journey a little easier. Meet Zhi Johnson, a young person in recovery who recently received the greatest surprise of all! Zhi has been a client at 4D Recovery, a local nonprofit that helps young adults to find and sustain their recovery from drugs and alcohol through peer mentorship, drop-in centers, leadership development, recovery events, and supportive housing, for 1.5 years and is nearly 18 months clean and sober! With 4D they’ve been able to maintain their sobriety, navigate resources, as well as set and achieve goals. One of these goals was getting into a car that would enable them to attend meetings and recovery events, get to and from work in a timely manner, and venture out in the Pacific Northwest to experience all that Oregon has to offer. “This car means safety, reliability, and a life full of adventure.” shares Zhi. 4D Recovery recently presented Zhi with a check for $5,000 in honor of Nick J. Smit, former General Manager and owner at Gresham Subaru, as a part of the Smit Scholarship fund, an annual scholarship to continue and honor his legacy. Zhi knew immediately she would purchase her car from Gresham Subaru because it is important for them to do business with a business who truly cares and supports the young recovery community. In fact, they were so ecstatic that immediately following receiving the check they went straight to Gresham Subaru and bought their new car that same day! Zhi was worried about financing and what they would be able to afford. Credit and money is often a difficult subject to navigate for those in early recovery due to the choices we made in active addiction. Gresham Subaru eased their worries and assured them they would find something that fit the budget. That is exactly what they did. Zhi couldn’t be happier with the overall experience and the end result in working with Gresham Subaru. Thank you Gresham Subaru for continually and generously supporting young adults to take back their power and create the life they want and deserve.

Valentines day suprise!

A few years ago, I started my car buying journey after seeing my neighbors brand new 2019 Subaru Ascent. At the time, I was driving a 1988 Buick passed down to me from my father, who had purchased it when it was brand new. My connection to this vehicle was unique because it reminded me of him, and I loved it. However, after a leaky moonroof and being less than reliable, I knew it was time to start looking. I set my eyes on multiple models and spent the better part of two years comparing various models and speaking with numerous dealerships. I began by asking all sorts of questions to an outstanding salesperson at the dealership and ended up deciding on the new Subaru Impreza sport sedan. The only thing left to do was to see it and drive it; it sounds pretty simple, right? Wrong. Unfortunately, that wasn't possible due to the national chip shortage. I sought the advice of my neighbor, who then recommended I call Gresham Subaru, where they had a wonderful experience two years earlier. So I made the call once again and got in touch with a gentleman named Sam. Over the next six months, Sam answered a laundry list of questions and helped me through the research process of making sure I was getting the right car with the right features. With Sam's guidance, I happily ordered an Impreza limited with all the safety features I wanted. Sam informed me it would take about two in a half months to arrive. After eagerly waiting, I received a call from Sam letting me know my car had arrived two weeks early! I was in complete shock, for I had just undergone surgery on my eye and could not drive a car for a couple of weeks, let alone drive to the dealership to sign paperwork. Sam let me know that was not a problem, and he would have the special tint applied before I came in and took delivery of my new car. After hearing, I may not get the tint applied before taking delivery due to a minor scheduling issue, I spoke with Jake, the General Manager. Jake then assured me he would get the tint done and asked if he could help with anything else. I then told him I was scared to get to the dealership to take delivery due to my recent surgery. Beyond my belief, Jake offered to drive the car out to me with Sam and deliver it. Not only that, he said he wanted to bring it to me on valentines day. Fast forward to Valentine's day, the phone rings, and it's Sam saying, "I'm outside; come see your new car!" I couldn't believe my eyes. I opened my door, and there she was, my beautiful new Impreza with the specially applied window tint, a Giant red ribbon accompanied by a heart-shaped cake, and a dozen red roses along with a giant LOVE banner! I really felt so special, and my neighbors even saw all this happening and came over to get in on the fun! I want to say thank you, Sam and Jake. You made me so happy, and what a great experience this has been. I will be a customer for life.

Alki road and I

Thank you Gresham Subaru for helping to support Alki Road and me. During my high school career I was hand picked to participate in a program led by John G, known as the brilliant outstanding women, or BOW's. I was pretty skeptical of anything that was helpful to my development at that point, but with the promise of free lunch I agreed. Immediately after the first meeting I knew I had made the right choice. I was introduced to students I had gone to school with for years but in a new light where we were all equally believed in. With this program, John and a few other teachers took us under their wing and showed us the right way to make a success story out of ourselves. I was given the chance to assess where I was at in life and where I wanted to go, without the pressure that typical counseling settings bring. We were given a toolbox for adulthood, and shown how to use it. The moment I knew that I had really changed gears was about 3 months into the program when I got my first after school job at the starbucks near my house. At that point I had never really given thought to where I wanted to go in life or what I wanted out of it. When it came to my home life, I was always encouraged by fear to not make mistakes, or the wrong choices. To be completely honest before this group, I had no ambition to follow any path I was given, because I could not envision success in my life. BOW's gave me other options, other roads to follow and showed me that I didn't have to have it all figured out at that age, but gave me the tools to figure things out as they came my way. It gave me the vision and opportunity of many different goals that I was now equipped to attain. This program pushed me, but it worked with my needs and it went at my pace. I started to feel better about the transition out of high school, and eventually after graduation I took on a full time position at starbucks and worked my way to supervisor shortly after. I worked that job, my very first job, for 7 consecutive years. I attribute so much of my early success to my mentorship with the BOW's program. My success story always has a mention of my early adulthood development that this group provided. I now work at a local credit union, serving my community and working everyday to navigate the path I have chosen for myself, with the tools I gained from BOW's so thank you once again for the support without it these programs would not be there and without these programs, I believe my life would be drastically different. Sincerely, Bre B

Gresham Subaru makes Emmalynn's wish come true!

Gresham Subaru has been an outstanding partner of Make-A-Wish Oregon for many years now and continued that into 2021. As a part of their Presenting Sponsorship for the Wish Upon A Car Raffle, Gresham Subaru wanted to make the wish of a local girl come true. Wish kid Emmalynn is just 4 years old, but has already undergone a kidney transplant that saved her life. When she and her family found out that that Emmalynn was going to have a wish, Emmalynn knew right away what she wanted, a play structure in her backyard with a rock wall and more! Once Gresham Subaru found out about Emmalynn's wish, they wanted to make the day that her wish was granted as special as possible! Nick, Jake, Renee, and the rest of their team did an incredible job putting together some of her favorites, popsicles, Capri-Sun, sandwiches, and a bunch of toys! Emmalynn was overwhelmed by the party that Gresham Subaru through for her and her family couldn't have been more appreciative! At Make-A-Wish, we aim to make every wish a once-in-a-lifetime experience, which is why our partnership with Subaru is such a perfect fit. Subaru is always looking to exceed expectations and there is no doubt they did with Emmalynn's party and wish to have a play structure! Thank you Gresham Subaru for caring about families in our local community and for making a positive impact in this challenging time!

So Thankful for Gresham Subaru

Dear Gresham Subaru, I am so thankful for the generous donation, Going where no one has been before has many challenges. A helping hand to navigate is one of the best tools you can have along the way. I myself can attest to finding tremendous assistance with the Dynamic Young Men group that I had the privilege to be a part of at Fort Vancouver High School. We were able to surround ourselves with people that were very successful in their fields of study/work and learn many tools that would give us the best chance to become successful in the journeys that we choose. As a young child I grew up in and out of homeless shelters and other low income housing structures. My single mother had very little formal education and no family to help her raise the two remaining children that the state allowed her to keep. She had a grand total of six children. Four of her children were taking away to the system due to her substance abuse with drugs. Luckily, for my older brother and myself, she got on the clean and narrow through the help of a community outreach program. By her doing this for us it gave my brother and I a chance to overcome the adversity of poverty we were in. Going into high school it became clear that you could really improve yourself by laying the groundwork for a better life, or you could really mess things up and continue the cycle of destruction. Unfortunately, I had many friends get girls pregnant, drop out of school entirely, and or go to juvenile detention because of the poor choices that they made. With a lot of chaos around every corner, navigating the road ahead of myself was made easier by being able to join a group like the DYMS. I was invited to join my Sophomore year of high school by John Griffin. The “Pledge of success”, was the DYM’s group motto. Taking the pledge seriously was the best thing that happened to me, as I learned the routes it took successful people to get where they are today. The groups mentors showed me many things such as: the correct ways to engage in their specific workplace settings, how to formally conduct a professional meeting, and how/when to apply yourself powerfully but also respectfully. These tools are simple, but when you come from where I’m from- with no fathers around- these life skills are never taught. The way you conduct yourself can really portray your intelligence. Words are powerful, but more so are actions. The mentors of the group express this religiously in our meetings and as a mentee you began to see how this matters in your own life. You are most like the five people you surround yourself with. In high school I was able to be around many great mentors of the DYM group. When you aren’t quite sure how to get where your going yourself, it’s great to have those five people who have been there to help you navigate where your looking to go. This program allowed me to do just that by gaining their knowledge, which I have applied many times in my life. This program truly put the final touches on me as a person to be successful in graduating college. To this very day I follow the motto of the group now as a successful professional athlete. I am forever thankful for the opportunity that i had joining the group. Sincerely, Richard VanSiclen

Make a Wish

Dear Gresham Subaru, Thank You for all you did for the car raffle this year including your donation of a car detail. Thanks in part to you, it was our MOST successful year ever!

Thank you Gresham Subaru for your support!

I want to take a moment to thank you for the donation through Gresham Subaru. I know that I have thanked you many times in passing but your contribution has made such an impact this year that I wanted to formally thank you. A bit of background on Alki Road Mentoring...As Principal the last 25 years I have seen many, many students fall through the cracks of being successful... simply because they didn't have the correct behaviors and skills necessary to operate in our society. As you know, being in the people business those "success skills" are paramount for a young adult entering the world outside of school. The last 12 years we have created "success luncheons" to do just that. Once a month we have the students at 4 different High Schools sit down with mentors from the community and simply talk about a theme for that day. Examples of themes are : first impressions, taking responsibility, work site protocols ...Long story short, we have impacted 512 young women and men to graduate from high school. These are students who were not on track to graduate, but by connecting these students with an outside mentor who cares, we have achieved the unheard of success rate of 100%. (we had one student, who didn't graduate on time but finished in the summer, so I still count him :) This year with your donation we were able to continue the program and help 53 students meet their goal. I'd like to tell you the stories of 2 of these students but it could easily be any of the 512 from the past. Monique (Mo) was an extremely driven girl who wanted to escape a crushing world of misfortune. One parent incarcerated, one parent drug affected. Mo was losing her battle with school because of the responsibilities she took on for the family. She listened at our luncheons and realized that she would be forfeiting on average 3.2 million dollars of income in her life if she didn't finish high school and attend some sort of schooling after graduation. We also were able to convince her that the world of poverty she would be heading into would only continue the life she was following. Fortunately, she bought into the ARM program and did what she could to rise above the chaos. We were able to get her an interview with a local Justice, we dressed her professionally, simulated an interview and were able to set the table for her success. She is working as a paralegal and is on track to go to George Fox University on scholarship. All of this would not have happened without the kind and generous gift from you. I can say without wavering you saved the future of that student... Mike, was a greasy haired, pimply faced kid who was quiet in the back of the room. He never engaged, never spoke up, and simply hid his whole life. We were able to talk him into joining our mentor luncheons and he connected with an adult who guided him through a positive impact walk. We were able to; get him to a dermatologist, dentist, barber, clothes shopping... a suit we purchased was worn to school once every two weeks ...we taught him manners and protocols to engage with people...the transformation for this kid would bring a tear to your eye. We later found out that he was homeless and estranged from parents who gave up on life and resorted to drugs. Mike wanted no part of that world. Currently, he was able to make up 5 deficient credits this year (unheard of at any school) and as I'm sending this e-mail he is picking up his cap and gown. The tears of his support team are flowing! I would like to say these students are the exception, but in fact they are the norm. On a personal note, I cannot tell you how important your donation was. I was in a difficult position of nearly shutting down the most successful program in my 35 years in education.Your ability and willingness to step up allowed me to continue and more importantly grow a program from one school to four. I cannot thank you and Subaru enough for your generosity and commitment to our forgotten kids. Sincerely and gratefully, John Griffin Director Alki Road Mentoring

Gresham Subaru makes the holidays magical!

From mid-November through early December Gresham Subaru championed the Make-A-Wish Oregon Toy Drive to support their Holiday Magic campaign. Over three weeks, the team collected a Subaru full of toys for children currently in Randall’s and Doernbecher’s Children’s Hospitals that Make-A-Wish Oregon will deliver during special events at each location. Their efforts to promote, support, and fulfill the need to bring magic to these children and their families who are going through difficult circumstances make them pillars of our community and people that can always be relied upon in challenging (and good) times. Thank you to Nick and the outstanding team at Gresham Subaru for their support this holiday season!

Gresham Subaru Grants Wishes for Kids

Kailia is 7 years old, loves art, painting, singing, dancing, dinosaurs and dolphins. She is also battling a critical illness and has been through many hospital stays and treatments. Nick's team at Gresham Subaru joined efforts with Make-A-Wish Oregon to grant Kailia's wish to go to Hawaii to swim with dolphins this summer! On June 7th, Kailia was treated to a luau-themed party at Gresham Subaru and was surprised with adorable gifts for her upcoming wish trip, a confetti welcome from staff, a Hawaiian feast, a hula dancer, ukulele player and a real fresh lei flown in strait from Hawaii. Thanks to our friends at Gresham Subaru for hosting a special luau in her honor. Make-A-Wish Oregon grants the wishes of children 2 1/2 - 18 years of age who are battling a critical illness. Wishes have proven physical and emotional benefits that can give a child a higher chance of survival. We are thankful for community partners like Gresham Subaru for making wishes come true for local children battling critical illnesses. Thank you!

WildCat Ridge Loves Gresham Subaru!

A HUGE thank you to Gresham Subaru for supporting WildCat Ridge Sanctuary during the 2018 Subaru Share The Love Event. WildCat Ridge received a check for $5,798.43, which covers an entire month of food for our residents. We feed our wildcats a high-quality diet that includes vitamin and nutrient rich meats that help our rescues live out their lives without ever having to worry about proper nutrition again. We are committed to providing the best possible care for our residents and we feed a diet that many have never been able to experience before coming to join us at the Sanctuary. That’s just one of the things that we do to make sure our rescues are healthy and happy. Our residents come from a wide variety of horrible conditions ranging from fur farms to roadside attractions. They often come to us severely malnourished and emaciated so diet is a critical element in their recovery. With an annual food budget of $48,000, this donation goes a long way towards making sure that the tigers, cougars, bobcats, servals, caracal and all the other cats continue to receive the care they deserve.WildCat Ridge Sanctuary is a non-profit sanctuary located in Scotts Mills Oregon, committed to providing a safe lifetime home for captive-born wildcats. Earning accreditation from The American Sanctuary Association (ASA), Tiger in America (TIA) ) The Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance and verification from The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), WildCat Ridge meets strict care & safety standards, and we are the only accredited big cat sanctuary in the Pacific Northwest. As a true sanctuary, we are NOT open to the public, we are not a zoo for people we are a safe haven for animals, and we do not buy, sell, breed or exhibit the wildcats that call WildCat Ridge home. WildCat Ridge Sanctuary receives no state or federal funding relying on fund-raising, and our generous donors & sponsors. Thank you, Gresham Subaru, for supporting UPWARD!

Many of us recall how the middle school years can be notoriously challenging. It’s a big leap from the sheltered and shepherded days of elementary to complicated, peer pressure filled, semi-independence of middle school. The goal of UPWARD Camas is to ease this transition via a week-long day camp that brings together rising 6th graders from the multiple elementary schools that feed into Camas middle schools. During UPWARD we address fears or questions kids bring to middle school life; Lockers, Classes, Teachers, Clubs, Sports, Lunch, FRIENDS, and NEW PRESSURES! In many ways, UPWARD is like any other summer camp: full of fun activities and games, from rocket-building and crazy relay races, to tie-dyeing and collaborative art projects, it’s where new friendships are made and given some space to grow. But beyond that, we give UPWARD kids the time and structure to think about their futures. Integrated in the day’s program of fun is a research-based curriculum that focuses on reducing risky behavior including the use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Conversations about difficult but necessary topics at this age like reputations, consequences, and developing good habits are all in play. Thanks to Nick and Gresham Subaru, we are able to expand our program from 2 weeks at one middle school in 2017, to 5 weeks across two middle schools this summer! At capacity of nearly 250 students in 2018, we are well on the way to our goal serving all of the Camas 6th graders. Your generous support of $5,000 will directly benefit 40+ students with partial or full scholarships to attend our UPWARD camps this summer. Thanks to you, they’ll have a jump on the school year, entering their new building as confident leaders, ready to help their fellow students on their middle school journey. THANK YOU!

Gresham Subaru for LLS

I arrived at the dealership quite late on a Sunday. I can only assume it was close to closing time. I was politely greeted by Bardell. I explained my reason for the visit. I told Bardell I was a survivor and thanked him for the Retailer's participation. He promptly shook my hand and patted me on the back. He said he filled out the first message of hope. He kept saying this is a good thing over and over as I was thanking him. After he shuffled through a handful of messages of hope he handed me his. I then learned Bardell was also a survivor and had left a most heartfelt message of hope. He knew I was not there to buy a car, but he shared a very intimate situation in his life. I apologized for my appearance. I explained I'd been in a car with two dogs since Friday. He did not hurry me along and remained very sincere and kind. A truly wonderful experience that filled me with warmth and the energy to continue my journey.

A High School Student's Life is Changed Forever

Chris will attend school, work part-time at Gresham Subaru, and receive a brand new set of tools all compliments of Gresham Subaru. In addition, after graduating the program, Chris will join the Gresham Subaru team full time and Gresham Subaru will pay for Chris Romig's student loan for as long as he is employed at Gresham Subaru. Nick Smit, GM and Partner of Gresham Subaru said "We are so proud to do this for Chris and look forward to him joining our team." Below is an excerpt from Chris's thank you letter. Mr. Smit, Before the beginning of my senior year, I felt like this would be my last year in schooling only because of my current monetary position. I felt like I would work at a lube shop for the rest of my life. But then came along Nick Smit and Steve Jewell. They came into our automotive class and presented me with a way to afford my schooling as well as being able to work on what I love, cars. Getting this scholarship means the world to me. No one in my family has gone to college, let alone graduate. I promise to put 110% of my efforts in my schooling as well as my job. I really appreciate the time that you've given me to show you who I am and what I'm all about. I want to thank everyone at Gresham Subaru! Sincerely, Chris Romig

The feel of buying from family

This was my first time ever buying a car before. I was incredibly nervous and stressed out about the whole thing because I had no idea what to expect and absolutely hate making decisions. Tracey at Subaru of Gresham helped me through the whole experience and stayed by my side from 9am to 5pm when I finally made the decision to buy. He made me feel comfortable and like he was on my side. I had previously only purchased cars family members had been ready to part with before but Tracey made my experience at a dealership still feel like working a deal with my uncle. The whole family there was great, and friendly, happy, excited-for-me smiles met me throughout each step. I know my car will last forever but I am confident my next car will come from them too! And I have recommended them to all my friends who are jealous of my beautiful new forester! Thank you all so much!
